genuinely curious what you all eat before training
I've been going back and forth on this for about two years now and I still don't feel like I've nailed it.
Right so context — I train mostly early evenings after work, which honestly is its own challenge because by 6pm I'm either starving or I've been stress-eating biscuits at my desk all afternoon and feel like a lead balloon. The timing of what I eat before a session seems to matter a lot more than I expected when I started all this.
I went through a phase of eating basically nothing beforehand because I read something about fasted training. Bad idea for me personally. I was flagging by the second set of anything and felt awful driving home. Then I overcorrected and had a full meal an hour before which was... also not great lol. Basically felt sick doing anything that involved bending.
What's actually been working recently is something small and fairly easy to digest about 90 minutes out. A banana and a bit of whey mixed up quickly usually does it — nothing fancy. I've also been having a matcha beforehand on days when I feel sluggish rather than coffee, just because it doesn't give me that horrible spike and then crash thing mid-session. To be fair I'm not sure if that's real or I've just convinced myself, but it seems to help with focus at least.
Mind you I'm no nutritionist, I'm just a finance director who started going to the gym at 38 because my GP gave me a look I didn't like. So genuinely — what are you all doing? Especially if you're training after work. I feel like everyone's situation is slightly different and I'm always interested what actually works for real people rather than what some article says.
